Eco Work

At Silverhill environmental sustainability is central to our core beliefs. We are passionate about educating young people in caring for our local and global environment.

Children are naturally engaged and full of wonder for the world around them. They are concerned about global issues such as climate change and want to engage in protecting wildlife and preserving the planet. By the age of 8/9 they already have a strong sense of conscience and are able to articulate what is right and just particularly when it is related to children. (schooling, heath, home, Fair Trade) The whole school carried out a doorways audit and the children have formulated their environmental promises.

We are the appointed ECO Hub School for Derby City and the involvement with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Global Education Derby has also ensured that we are working with clusters of schools, sharing good practice and developing our sustainability within our own environment.
We are working hard and having fun at developing the habitats within our grounds.

We have:

  • A wild flower meadow
  • A pond
  • Hedgehog homes
  • Bird and bat boxes
  • A newly planted orchard
  • A wood land area
  • Allotments
  • Log piles for mini beasts
  • A willow dome
  • Lots of trees and of course, the rabbits and the chickens.

We are members of the Regional Centre for Expertise (RCE) and our school is show cased on the newly launched website www.sustainableschoolseastmidlands.org.uk.

We try very hard to make sure we use our grounds as much as possible and a great deal of learning takes place outside.

In September The Foundations Stage pupils are embarking on Forest Schools activities and more will be posted about these events as they occur.
